FEATURED INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE
Mockingbird Bookshop — Bath, Maine
In addition to a diverse selection of books, Mockingbird Bookshop sells gifts, cards, stationary, and miscellany. They also have a tea and coffee bar, where they host seasonal afternoon teas with gourmet tea selections and sweet and savory snacks.
“I think Mockingbird has offered a place of calm and respite for the community of Bath and surrounding areas. We have tried to offer a bigger and broader variety of books relating to current events and that more people will see themselves reflected in. We also have tried to be a place of hope, belonging and joy. We haven’t been open long, so I’m not quite sure what to say about what we’ve had to offer writers. I’m happy to say we were able to provide a window display for authors around Maine and New England for an online festival put on by Bath Book Bash. We were also able to provide books for customers by the authors involved in the festival.”
History
Previously called the Mustard Seed Bookstore, and Bath Bookstore before that, Mockingbird Bookstore has been a local highlight in Bath, Maine for years. Terri and Jeff Shurz became the owners of the store in 2014, after Terri worked at Mustard Seed Bookstore for four years and its owner, Julie Shea, retired. The Shurz family made this little coastal town home after a big move from landlocked Colorado Springs, and their hope is that Mockingbird Bookstore gives everyone who visits a sense of belonging.
“The Mustard Seed Bookstore has been a place of joy for countless people, and Terri and Jeff are dedicated to continuing that same quality of care and service to everyone who walks through the door. Our mission is to curate a beautiful, quality and diverse selection of books for people of all ages and interests so that everyone can find something to read. We want this to be a space where everyone feels a sense of belonging. If you don’t find a book to love, we will happily order one just for you. We hope you will enjoy the variety of gifts, cards, stationary and miscellany as well. Whether you know just what you want or would simply like to browse around a peaceful shop, you will be welcomed. Come in for a book or gift and stay for a cup of coffee or tea. We can’t wait to meet you!”
